The opening of Spartak Cultural and Sports Complex was a central event
on the first day of the town festivities. The ribbon was cut by the Minister of Culture Mr. Stefan Danailov. Official guests at the ceremony were the visiting delegation from Leicester, led by Lord Mayor Mary Draycott, the governor of Haskovo Region Raina Yovcheva, members of parliament. A brilliant ending to the solemn evening was provided by Balgare Ensemble's folklore spectacle entitled This is Bulgaria, with the participation of the actor Georgi Cherkelov, an honorary citizen of Haskovo.
On the Day of Haskovo, September 8, for the first time in the history of the town the mayor of the municipality was given an official necklace – a symbol of power The idea was borrowed from the friendly English city of Leicester, whose Lord Mayor wears a similar attribute of power. The necklace of Haskovo's mayor was elaborated in Bulgaria's mint. It was presented to the mayor of the municipality Georgi Ivanov by the chairman of the Municipal Council Mr. Dimitar Velev. From that day onwards, the mayor will represent Haskovo at formal events with this symbol of power and dignity. As of September 8, the population of Haskovo increased with three more citizens. The most prestigious title of the town, Honorary Citizen of Haskovo was conferred on the Lord Mayor of Leicester Mary Draycott, the Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Johnson and the representative of Maritsa RAM in Leicester Yudey Dolakia. “These are the people of greatest merit for the fostering of good relations between Haskovo and Leicester, who were unanimously proclaimed honorary citizens of Haskovo by the Municipal Council,” said the host of the ceremony, the mayor Mr. Georgi Ivanov. Ivan Chaushev, an actor with over 100 roles in the theater, cinema and television, and Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, a reputed medic and endocrinology specialist, were also proclaimed honorary citizens of Haskovo. The special ceremony on conferring the titles was attended by the Bulgarian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Emilia Maslarova, the British Ambassador to Bulgaria H.E. Mr. Jeremy Hill, members of parliament, the regional governor, municipal advisers, mayors of other municipalities. “Citizens of Haskovo, you have always faced the challenges with dignity and have dealt with them with faith. Therefore you have singled out just the right words for your town's coat of arms: Dignity and Faith,” said Emilia Maslarova. Minister Maslarova, Ambassador Jeremy Hill and the members of the English delegation received scale models of the Holy Virgin Mary's sculpture with the wish that the Mother of God may protect the friends of Haskovo.
