The protocol also specifies the rank of the seats in the car. Number one – the place of honour – is the right seat in the back with a left steering-wheel. It is offered to the highest guest. The reason for its location does not only rest on the theory of privileges, but also on statistical data that it is the safest.

In terms of etiquette, which includes pragmatism, this place enables the guest of honour to get down directly onto the pavement without having to get down on the side of the traffic and go round the car.

The seat second in rank is located behind the chauffeur and finally comes the one next to the chauffeur. According to statistics, it is the riskiest in case of accident.

In countries with right-wheel traffic, the place of honour is the left seat in the back.
