The stairs
How to climb up and down

Ева Куванджиева Наполеоне The conventional rule of giving way to the ladies, a basic mark of gentlemanly manners, is not valid here. Of course, if you use an elevator you should not fall out of this habit, but stairs exist and require a different conduct. Even if we have to reach the beach from the fabulous terrace of a Mediterranean villa, we have to know how to climb the stairs with a lady.

When climbing up a narrow staircase, the man has to go before the woman. This rule has its reason. If the man lets the lady go first, which is the rule in other situations, his eyes will be at an awkward level. Therefore, the gentleman who does not wish to embarrass the lady he is accompanying will avoid this by going first.

When climbing down, the man goes first again. Here the reason is different. If the lady accidentally slips or trips, the man will be able to help her and act as a saver.

If the stairs are broad (like those of Villa Rotunda of the most famous 16th century architect Paladio), the man and the woman climb up and down side-by-side. It is proper for the escort to lead by one stair. This elegant principle is very practical from an aesthetic point of view, too. It often happens that the lady is taller (even only because of the high heels), and at least temporarily the natural balance will be restored. Also, the desired expression of solemnity, which this type of stairs are meant for, will be achieved.
