Even today the balls constitute an inseparable part of the Fasching Vienna Carnival. Most balls in Vienna take place in January or February, although the first begin as early as November and the last finish in late June. Their total number amounts to approximately 300. The most important among them is the traditional Opera Ball, its name being derived from the fact that it is held in the Vienna State Opera.

Today the Vienna Opera Ball is a representative holiday for the Republic of Austria.

The Vienna Club Association staged this year's Vienna Ball in the halls of the Hilton Hotel on February 5. Dr. Karl Diem, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria, addressed the guests at the opening: “As Ambassador of the Republic of Austria, I would like to express my great satisfaction with the fact that the already traditional Vienna Ball in Sofia is winning more and more friends. In 2004 the multiple cultural events attested to the consolidation of the Austrian-Bulgarian diplomatic relations in their 125-year existence. This year's ball in a new atmosphere is the link between the previous and the current year, which will bring Austria a lot of jubilees and memorable events. We can pride ourselves on most of them, as they reflect the valour and viability of the Austrian people. Therefore it is entirely justifiable to mark these jubilees abroad, and the beginning here will be set by our ball…”

The Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Nikolay Vassilev welcomed the guests and thanked the hosts for enabling people to meet, talk and dance in a magnificent atmosphere.

Mrs. Maria Neikova, chief secretary of Vienna Club Association, highlighted that the sum of 3,000 levs, collected at the charitable ball, would be allocated to the Neurology Clinic of Alexandrovska University Hospital and the Home for Veterans of Culture in Sofia.
