One of the oldest cultural institutions in Bulgaria grandly marked its anniversary. In the context of the new and the newest history, the 110th anniversary of the National Academy of Arts is a fact of crucial importance for culture. In the distant 1896 – the year of its establishment, there were only a few national institutions that had the vocation of raising Bulgarians’ education and culture. The Bulgarian Literary Society (1868) was not yet transformed into Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the National Library was less than 20 years old and from the establishment of the Sofia University merely 8 years had passed! Two years later the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency would appear and eight years afterwards the National Theatre. If the history of an institution spreads over three centuries, if it is almost of the age of the New Bulgarian State, the pride, the responsibility and the consciousness of its public and cultural mission are natural.
